The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa is the country's sole government-mandated quality assurance authority for tourism. It is the only body entitled to award star gradings to South African accommodation, and gradings are earned through an on-site assessment against a published national standard — not self-declared.

At four stars an establishment must show excellent comfort and quality throughout, with a consistently high standard of service and facilities.   Breakfast quality and presentation, home-cooked weekday dinners, and the hygiene standards behind them.

  Connectivity, workspace, laundry, pool and the extras expected at four-star level.
